Research > Reuse Associated Outcomes
As you might already know, reuse of hemodialyzers has become a common practice in U.S. dialysis units. The way in which reuse is performed varies from unit to unit. Dialyzers can be cleaned either by machine or by hand, and different units choose different chemicals to use for the cleaning process. Dialyzer reuse has been controversial since its beginning, and questions have been raised about the safety of the practice. Some investigators, for instance, looking at data from 1989 and 1990, reported a higher risk of death for patients whose dialyzers were cleaned with certain types of chemicals. While our own studies confirmed these findings for these particular years, we believe that this was an isolated incident since we have not found this result in analyses of data after 1990. We believe that dialyzer reuse is a safe practice, and that patients whose dialyzers are reused face no higher risk of death than those patients who receive a new dialyzer each time they run.
